since the engine starts and runs, I think you can rule out timing chain. all of the 2.0 turbos and 2.3 N.A. 4 cylinder engines that i have replaced failed balance shaft chain,sprockets and tensioners on, came in noisy, but never have any caused smoke to come from the front of the engine! what yopu are describing, to me, sounds like a classic case of serpintine belt idler pulley failure. when the bearing's grease dries up, they sieze, the belt will keep turning and a lot of noise and smoke will result as things start to melt. this is a far cheaper repair than replacing balance shaft chain componants.
