As I wrote yesterday, I purchased a 97' 900S Convertible after long negotiations for $9000 about six weeks ago. I love it. It's interior and feel is very simple, even ascetic with its black and beige scheme and hard leather seats. The top's black liner provides a feel of coziness, if that doesn't sound too stupid to admit.
Anyway, before I bought the 900 I test drove 8 different 99' 9-3s, one of which I kept for a weekend. The price difference in the end was what led me back to the 900 (plus the fact it's an especially good price for a convertible), though the biggest differences I noticed was that the 9-3, especially the SE, is trying much harder to be a capital L Luxury car, and as such had a more squishy feel overall. The turbo, though, was a little freaky, as when I turned left at traffice lights the damn car practically lept into the curve after an initial delay. With the stop and start traffic here in Chicago I decided this would be too much of a driving burden. Anyway, I do think the 9-3 SE had its charms, and for coming off leases the purchase price was around $15,000, which is more than reasonable. However, as others have pointed out, the 99' 9-3 still has it's fair share of maitenance issues.
