First, thank you to Aaron and Rob. Aaron for your
advice on the speakers and Rob for his installation
FAQ. (rem_mod)
The Problem
The SE comes with 6 speakers. The 6.75" woofers in
the door sounded very mushy when they thumped a low
note. I suspected a torn cone, but when i removed
them it was apparent it was just poor speaker quality.
The rear 6x9's have the unfortunate position of
collecting 5-10% of all water running off the hatch
when it is opened. Needless to say the speaker cones
were not in good shape. They didn't sound bad, but
weren't good either.
The Procedure
I agree with Rob that leaving the stock amplication
and head unit is the easiest and most cost effective
route. So with Aaron's very heplful advice I
purchased the following Blaupunkt speakers.
2 - 3.5" 2-WAY SPEAKER PCXG352 $30
2 - 6" X 9" 3-WAY SPEAKER RL6937 $35
2 - 6.5" 2-WAY SPEAKER RL6528 $35
The speakers are of better quality as well as the rear
speakers are now 3-way instead of 2. Also the door
speakers are 2-way instead of just a woofer. I'm not
sure the latter makes much of a difference since the
current has already seen a crossover, but more is
always better, right?
The Installation
the front speakers were very easy. As were the rear
speakers, although i did need to mount them under the
existing shelf instead of on top of it, so they could
clear the grille. The door speakers were a bit more
challenging because the old speakers were housed in a
very odd basket. (must remove the door panel first) I
discarded the basket and drilled pilot holes for sheet
metal screws. In all cases i had to cut off the SAAB
connector in favor of a crimped butt connector to the
Blaupunkt supplied wires.
The Results
As Aaron predicted the mid and especially high end are
much more clear with the Blaupunkt speakers. Great
for Jazz! Also the low end is much more distinct and
crisp. Great for Rap! In the past, the Bass was
muffled, rumbling, and constant. The new speakers hit
each note much more distinctly.
Conclusion
This was one of the most inexpensive and fun DIY
projects i've done in a while. I recommend it to all
NG owners.
