I second the opinion that the master cylinder is suspect.

If brakes have not been bled, then the MC is what suffers as the reservoir has the greatest concentration of water contamination. The reservoir should be emptied and refiled every year, and that should be done prior to a bleed job to avoid pushing the worst though the whole system.

And if calipers have been replaced or rebuild, or brake bled not to long ago, the MC seal cups may have been cut from traving on corroded sections of the MC as the petal goes to the floor. In any case, for whatever reason, if the petal is going to the floor, then this damage can occur to compount whatever else is wrong.

You can get repair kits with new seal cups or perhaps piston assys with the soft bits already to go. As long as the MC bore is not too bad. The MC bore can be cleaned up with very find wet/dry sandpaper. I suggest trying #600. When doing this work, if pads have some where, you can install the new or repaired MC and tighten the fittings, then force the pads and pistons back to back load fluid into the MC and avoid having to do a bleed if that makes sense, otherwise you can avoid pushing any air thru the system while doing a bleed.

There are other things to be aware of re cleanlyness etc when doing this kind of work. You can water wash the MC, blow it out and for good measue bake dry in the oven if you wish. You must avoid water, oils, grease and other contaminates.

These vented reservior systems are really stupid, this allows air to enter complete with moisture. It breaths with changes in temperature, which is every start-stop- cycle plus day and night.

You cannot use silicone brake fluid! Use DOT4.
