The engine last forever with a little bit of TLC,
As for the balance chain issue, it seems that it is no pattern yet to put the finger on.
As for me personally, I have only had 94-97 2.3L non turbo failing ( 6 so far) and others on the board have had 2.0L T that failed.
And then you have people on the 9K board that claims that this is an issue only with early 2.3L 9000 engines because of a hardening process that went wrong with the sprockets for balance chain, and the the new partnumber is good to go.
One issue that seems to make it worse though is that the oil pressure switch fails and the driver don't even know when the engine starts to go bad, and you are on top of that already.
I don't think you should be worry at all with the T-chain.
