Yes, it would pick up elevated Fe. But larger bits will be in the filter, not the oil sample.
A strong magnetic oil drain bolt would be better at presenting chunks of steel. These cost over $25US and I have one in the VW Passat DTI diesel. I checked that it fit the Saab on oil change day and the Saab will have one next oil change.
So much for detection, perhaps better oil will be prevention? Using synthetic?
