GM's engineers must be really busy, the new Epsilon platform will be used in a series of GM models, Saab's 9-3, Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac Grand Am, Saturn L series and the Opel Vectra. And our spy photographer has just taken some photos of the Saab and Vectra prototypes.
Saab 9-3, internal development code 109, this will be the first new model to use the Epsilon platform. They expect to begin production sometime later this year, but the all-new 9-3 - as of the first quarter of 2002 - is hoped to go on sale as a 2003 model. By using the corporate-provided platform, engine, running gear and floor-pan without major modification, Opel and Saab will be able to use their own visible parts, like door handles, rear-view mirror, decorative control panel, and even floorboards they can conform to their own make's style and unique design. And more, worth Saab buyers being very happy about it, the ignition switch will still be between the front seats. The new engines will be used by both Saab and Opel. [I may lose it a bit on the tech stuff here]. The entry-level Vectra will have installed a 1.8 liter 4-cylinder engine, but it can also be marked 2.0 or 2.2 liters. There will be two V6 engines to chose from, one 2.6 liters and one 3.2 liters. All the engines, including the newly developed turbocharged diesel engine, have an assertive nature, are economical, and all have been greatly enhanced. Other than the 1.8 liter engine used in the entry-level Vectra, all other models will definitely be able to make use of the new Saab all-drive system, but there is an expectation to have selected the turbo as a prior option.
From the Hans Seer-led German design group has given the Vectra a distinctive outline and a high standard of interior decoration. Using high-quality materials and meticulous workmanship required by those highly demanding European buyers. The original 2001 design was to have been on display at the Frankfurt Auto Show but General Motors postponed it until display the 2002 Geneva Auto Show.
