Timing Chain Cover

My '97 900SET (70k) water pump bearing seized, and put a small hole in the timing chain cover. The mechanice says he can patch weld a repair for $260. My questions are:
1) Will this work? ie: will the repair hold?
2) Is this cheaper than replacing the cover? and
3) Is $260 a reasonable price?
Thanks in advance.
