As discussed, benzene is actually a nasty carcinogenic organic chemical (chemical formula C6H6). This benzene ring molecule actually forms the basis for many organic chemicals.........okay, I admit that I studied org chem at uni a million years ago!!
Bottom line is that probably in the good old days, benzene was used as a solvent before people were aware of how toxic it is. Basically, if you are trying to remove sticky gummed on deposits of old gasket etc., then any solvent that dissolves grease will likely help, e.g. turpentine, mineral spirits, methylated spirits, nail varnish remover (acetone). Depending on the application, I prefer to use a more volatile solvent e.g. acetone, as it evaporates quickly re. leaving deposits behind that may be incompatable e.g. with oil. However, be aware that the more volatile ('fumy') the solvent, the greater the risk of fire and inhalation i.e. don't smoke, keep off skin and maintain ventilation. I believe that gasoline contains benzene, which may be where the French term for gasoline comes from??
