Dreaded check engine light and power "hiccups"

About a week ago, the ce light lit briefly on my 1994 900S (5-sp). Ever since then, it has been experiencing "hiccups", ie, I either hit the gas or clutch/brake and it starts to sputter and threatens to stall. It also does that crazy roller coaster idle sometimes when stopped. Today, my mechanic said he couldn't get the code out of the Motronic (?) computer for some mysterious reason, although I do have "grounds and power at the data control link." He did find a "vacuum leak at the intake manifold from the throttle body to the crank case ventilation" and fixed it, but on my way home tonight, it hiccupped again, this time losing power while on a freeway on ramp.
He wants me to bring it back in sometime when he has another '94 900S so he can swap my parts with the other car, but I'm not too cool with that. If my car were the "good" one, I'd be kind of miffed knowing that someone was doing that with it.
In any case, any ideas or suggestions? Would the dealer have any better chance getting the code? Thanks for any help.
