Looking for a car for my sister. Need info on '96 900S

Hi, I am new here, so please forgive me if this is old info.
My first car was a 1984 900Turbo. I bought it with 122k on the clock, and drove it til 180k. I had the car when I lived in upstate, NY, and there were plenty of places that work on Saabs.
When I moved back home to NYC, I got rid of it (still running well with 180k miles) because nobody would work on Saabs.
Currently I drive an Audi A4, which I also love. But I still have a soft spot in my heart for Saabs.
My sister is in the market for a car. I called my old mechanic in upstate, NY and he has a '96 900S with only 55k miles on it. Asking price is $8900, which is certainly fair according to Edmunds.com.
I had test driven the '94 when the New Generation 900 came out, and I liked it a lot. It had the same "soul" that my '84 had, only newer.
I also test drove a 2000 9-3 before I bought my Audi, and I did not like it all.
So I am wondering how the '96 cars were in terms of reliability, safety ratings, drivability, and anything else that I should be looking for in a used Saab.
I'm about to drive 200+ miles to check out this car, and while I do trust the mechanic completely, I would like to gather some background information before I take the trip upstate.
Thanks very much!
-- Peter
