Take a DC voltmeter, put it across the battery terminals and start the car.
If the alternator is charging, it should read 13-14 volts when the car is running. If it fluctuates or shows 12.0V or below, your alternator is not working.
The biggest problem with the NG900 alternators are that the diodes in the voltage regulator (attached to the back of the alternator) get fryed after a few years...they overheat from being overworked due to the small battery Saab uses relative to all the electronics on the car. An Optima battery will solve this.
You can change just the voltage regulator and brushes, but you have to remove the alternator anyway, and 75% of the time the bearings are worn out too...so replacing the whole thing is probably the best idea.
