I have a '95 900SE Turbo with about 87000 miles. Over the past month a knocking sound in RF wheel area has been developing - now more common and louder. It occurs when coasting, in or out of gear. It increases slightly when turning to R. It ceases when the engine is pulling the car or when braking. It is independent of speed, engine rpm, gearing, cold or warm engine, weather, or road conditions. It sounds like "clop, clop, clop", "plop, plop, plop", e.g., more a softer sound than a harsh metallic sound. A Saab service and a very highly regarded independent shop specializing in Saabs drove the car and both had no idea of the problem and said it would be best to drive until failure, as an exploratory shop time would be very expensive. The Saab service did drain the steering gear box and found a normal amount of metal shavings in the oil, and replaced the gear oil.
I know nothing but could it be that 2 parts (gears or linkage) have developed some play which is not evident when a force (power or braking) is applied to them. Then without a force pushing one or the other against the other the play allows this slapping back and forth.

Any ideas of what the problem is and what do I ask a shop to do?

I would expect that Saab would have driven cars to failure for feedback to engineering and would have a catalog of symptoms leading to failures . And that such a catalog would be available to service men. Any comments?

I would especially like to hear from SaabCarsUSA if drive to failure is recommended despite the possibility of a serious accident.

And I would like hear from Saab engineering in Trollhättan as to what the problem is and if there is a "catalog" of symptoms.
