Thanks, Roger. I am excited about getting back into it again. I think I was intimidated when I got my Saab 9000 - it seemed so complex compared to my old 80's Subaru wagon that I decided to just let the pros handle it. But I found over the years that by leaving it to other people I was actually more apt to let the maintenance slide. I feel a bit guilty for "Speedy", my 9000 because I really became a bit of a slacker on maintenance... not horrible but not fixing every little (non-mechanical) thing, keeping up with oil changes but little else. I now understand that, as you say, working on my car helps me to bond with it and take better care of it.

Today I finally decided on a car - a 96 900SET which an old friend of mine is selling... I know he took good care of it and didn't abuse the turbo because I've been driving with him in that thing since he bought it and he has religiously changed the oil every 3000 miles (has all receipts, etc). In addition the car was serviced with new brake pads and a checkup last week, and had its big 65K service a few months ago.

Any suggestions on what I should do when I first get it to familiarize myself with it. The Haynes books I have looked at are confusing to me (I don't do well with schematics). I liked those "Compleat idiot" books because they had line drawings that were actually quite accurate! Don't think they ever made it for a Saab though, and if so it woyuld have been for the Classic.

By the way, I was quite disappointed by the two 900S's I drove this weekend, but am wondering if they were quite up to par because people on the board seem to like them. They seemed very underpowered to me, both the automatic and the 5-speed. I thought they'd definitely feel faster than my 1991 9000S but they didn't. Perhaps both vehicles were not in great shape.
