At least on my 2.3L "S" the black plastic cover which must be removed from the back of the alternator to access the brush pack would not come off without the alternator out. I was able to get the 3 screws out of the cover and the cover free, but the mounting bracket for the alternator kept it from moving enough to get it out. I tried like hell after removing the lower bolt and loosening the top one to pivot the alternator out to clear the bracket, but it wouldn't budge.
So I took the entire alternator out and low and behold, it had a crappy feel and sound to the bearings when I turned the shaft....so I ended up replacing it anyway, exchanging my brush pack for an entire alternator.
The alternator was not too hard to get off. Two long bolts, one on top and one on bottom. Pulled free with a pry bar. The the cover comes right off and the brush pack is right there. Two phillips screws and the new brush pack is in.
Hope this helps.
Nick.
