Dean, I know that there is a problem with these engines, but I also think that the problem may only show up on cars that have had "less than perfect" maintenance. Let's say that at some point in the past the car was driven for more than 10K miles without an oil change. That is quite normal and should not cause an immediate problem in any car. Maybe when the oil gets dirty or even low the engine does not lubricate the chain properly. That would damage the chain/sprockets and the breakdown will start. Once the chain is damaged it will probably wear out fast even if the engine gets regular oil changes. That would explain why some people have had problems with cars coming off leases while others have driven 150K miles with no signs of trouble. I wonder if anyone who knows for sure that their car was perfectly maintained have had this problem? The turbos don't seem to have the problem as often maybe because of better maintenace (turbo owners probably care better for their cars) or maybe because of the bigger oil pump. I am not trying to make excuses for Saab (this is unacceptable), but I do think that less than perfect maintenance (not actual neglect) has something to do with it. Let's see what you find in your engine?
Just my 5 cents, I am not a mechanic and I don't even know how these balance shafts look!
