Idler Pulley Attacks! Antifreeze everywhere, uh oh...

On my way back from Ohio yesterday, the center idler pulley froze, belt rode on the frozen pulley briefly before shredding... I noticed a burning rubber smell, but thought it was coming from the truck in front of me. As soon as the belt went, I knew what was up. I monitored the temp gauge, but it was holding steady at half way between cold and hot (where it was most of the trip, so I proceeded to the next exit (about 1.5 miles). As soon as I stopped at the end of the ramp, the temp gauge spiked. I turned into the first gas station and cut the engine, but when I opened the hood, there was coolant all over the drivers side of the engine bay.
Had the car towed to the local mechanic (the only one in the area, as I was in poe-dunk Georgia at the time). He warned me that I could have blown a head gasket...
I examined the heater hoses but could not determine where the coolant was coming from. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it likely that a head gasket could have went out?
By the way, the center idler pulley was dislodged from the bearing (just sitting there) and the bearing was seized on the shaft.
Anyway, had to rent a car to get home and left the Saab in Georgia. If it's just a hose, pulley, and belt I'll have them do it. But if it's more serious, I'll tow the car back to Orlando and have it done locally.
Any thoughts about the likelyhood of a head gasket going would be appreciated...
