I stumbled into the world of Saabs when I bought a used '90 900s from an acquaintance a few years and was soon hooked. I had to part with it due to a move and am now currently looking for hopefully my 2nd Saab. My dilemma is to stick with the classics or move up to a NG900. I have had a tough time finding a pre-'93 car in the area that is in really good shape and has decent AC (which is so important in the midwest), and I would like a car that is still around or under 100,000. I just started looking out for newer models and may take a look at a '96 900SE turbo going for an asking $8,500.

My big concern is maintenance costs. I want to stay with Saab based on past positive experience, but with going back to grad school around the corner I am trying to stay realistic about costs and potential money-pits. I have heard doom and gloom about maintenance costs for 94-96 900's, so was hoping to get some experienced advice.

I perused the BB on NG's and only noticed trends of bad pulleys and timing chains (?? the latter which I didn't even know Saabs had - is that new?). Anything else to know about these years? I am not a mechanic, so when I do take a look at the mentioned 96 900 SE Turbo I will be focusing on the records. The car has 72,000 now; what major service and/or replacements should have been done by this point? A turbo is also new territory for me - anything that will stand out if something is amuck (noises, etc.)?

I figure I can either try to buy an older, less expensive classic Saab and invest some $ at the onset to keep it running well for a few years, or perhaps try for a newer model which is an easier find. All the same I am trying to stay with Saab as opposed to succumbing to a Honda or Toyota. I was fortunate with my last Saab in that I didn't have any high-ticket items, aside from a bad heater valve. I know getting a used car is a luck-of-the-draw, so I am just trying to make an informed decision. Thanks in advance for any input.
