Check Engine Light Came On

The check engine light turned on for the first time last night when I turned on the car in the parking lot. Car has been running super in the past and no performance problems that I can see or feel. She's a 98SET Talladega 94k Km's., NGK plugs, Mobil 1 oil, switched to Sunoco gas. Coolant level is normal, brake fluid level is normal, gas cap tight. I have not cleaned the battery terminals or any ground wire connections. I don't think any of the 02 sensors have ever been changed or cleaned. As I said before the car runs the same, but I don't want to let this go. Plus the second time I started the car this morning (with hood up) my old man noticed a small puff of smoke from the front of the engine. What could this be? I plan to take the car to the dealer and retrieve the fault code and then try and do the work my self. Has anyone cleaned an O2 sensor before? Any thing else I should be checking out?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
