On one point. When there is a fuel cut, there is no fuel to fire or mis-fire. So while the O2 sensor could see a lean condition, the ECU should not be so brain dead that it does not see an adaption fault during a fuel cut. With so many MBC's on ODB I and II, we would see this situation all of the time, and it is never reported.
I suspect that the plugs could be fouled and are tracking at higher boost pressures where the gap is harder to break down. Other factors could be excessive gap or off spec plugs such as Bosch platinum plugs that can foul up really bad becuase they run too cold for a turbo application. Also check for cracked insulators - rare but reported. For a DI with over 80000 miles I would suspect the DI if the plugs were good.
