Well, after a friend got it, I've been all sold on this satellite radio stuff...
I've been contemplating ways of adding it to the factory headunit without too much loss of functionality. I kinda want to keep the factory head unit because of the SID integration, and because it matches with everything. Here's what I've been thinking:
Since the factory radio doesn't have aux (line level) inputs, I *could* cut in to the line level inputs in the DIN connector that the CD changer uses, and then through some switching relays, I could switch the inputs between the CD changer and the satellite radio decoder. The bad part of this of course is that the CD changer continues to play CDs while listening to the satellite radio BUT it does allow volume and sound control from the head unit.
Since my current audio setup retains the factory head unit, but uses the preamp outs to connect to an aftermarket amp which powers all the speakers, I could setup switching relays to connect the line outs of the satellite radio decoder directly to the line ins of the amplifier. BUT this would mean putting in some sort of adhoc volume control, and it totally looses any sound adjustment and quality controls. Lots of trouble with this one.
Or I could totally take a big hit, and use RF modulation - which I want to avoid, but lots of people in the past who swore they'd never be satisfied with RF modulation have said that in the end, it works wonderfully, with no discernable loss of quality.
Anyone have any other ideas?
...or maybe I should save the $$ for inevtiable balance shaft chain sprockets... ;)
