Leather Shift Boot

I recently purchased a leather boot for my 95 900SE. The installation was, ahem, a snap, but since there were no instructions in the box, I have a few questions. A thin piece of wire with each end bent into a loop was in the box. What's that for? Also, the top of the boot has four vertical cuts in it, resulting in four leather "fingers". Do this attach anywhere? They creep up and over the reverse pull which is kind of annoying. Am I missing something? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
