All the ATF I've seen in the past decades has had red coloring. Nobody makes a brown ATF---what you have is oxidized fluid. Were it mine, I'd change it out. Actually, I'd probably buy a case of ATF meeting Dexron specs, and change what is in the pan, drive long enough to mix the fluid, and repeat 3-4 times. By that time, the fluid should look pretty clean. Then I'd get a case of synthetic ATF and repeat the operation all over.
There are technicians who will tell you that if the fluid looks and/or smells real bad, better not to mess with it. However, I'd rather have it die when I know where it is than on the beltway in freezing rain late at night<g>.
