They are usually a very light brown with a minor increase in gap when I check them at 5k mile intervals. I change them at about 20k mile intervals. I also noticed that keeping to 1 mm or less gap, my engine seems to be happiest. Performance seems a tad off when they get a hair above 1 mm.
