Car "Shimmy"

I have a 96 900 XS, manual gearbox 100k miles. The problem i have is that the whole car "shimmies" (for the want of a better word) when i accelerate. When pulling onto a motorway and going through the gears to join flow, it feels like the front of the car is going from side to side or up and down! I have had the wheels balanced and tracking checked, all ok. The steering wheel does'nt shake, its more a seat of the pants feeling.
Its most noticable in 3rd and 4th between 2000rpm to 3500rpm but also in top to a lesser degree. Its worse under load and if i back off and coast it smooths out.
Its a pain because 70mph to 80mph equates to 3000/3500rpm and i find myself going faster to go past the 'shimmy' (feels ok at 4000 rpm but thats nearer 90mph and police wont belive car wobble as an excuse!)
Any help most appreciated, what should i check?
