Rear speakers are out, what should I do now?

Hi gang,
I removed my stock 6x9s from the rear of my NG900S and since the Alpines I have don't fit through the top of the speaker whole, should I...
1. bend the metal opening to accept the Alpines mounted on top
2. mount the speakers from the bottom. (when I do so, they protrude downward 1/2" more than the top mounted stock ones do.)
I would prefer to bottom-mount but I'm worried about the protrusion bumping into the carpet or something else. Also, does the sound quality suffer with a bottom mount method? If you do think I should bend the metal for a top mount, what is the best way to do so?
Thanks in advance for any help you might have,
