No, I did not have to remove the oil pan to successfully apply JB Weld. It would be BETTER to remove the oil pan (especially if the crack or hole is fairly big) but in my case it was just a hairline crack that caused a slow leak. Just be sure to drain all the oil (preferable overnight) and clean the area well...
