Front and back valve cover gaskets are a DIY if you are somewhat inclined to do so, and while the covers are off, replace the plugs and wires yourself as well. It takes basic mechanical skills, a few wrenches and a torque wrench, and a trip to the auto store. Search for my post on doing the rear valve cover gasket, about a few months ago I gave a detailed procedure for the V6 rear, the front procedure is posted elsewhere, it only takes a few tools and a few hours, order the parts from a site sponsor (two gaskets, o-rings, plugs, plenum gasket, should be less than 50-60$, I don't know the cost for the wires; a can of gasket remover).
Once the covers are off, it takes only a minute or two to change each plug, its like changing a lightbulb, but a little dirtier, plus you'll look cool with grease all over your hands.
I paid $400 to have the rear gasket replaced, a few years back. After doing it myself, there's no way I would pay that much again.
BTW, I too had soaked wires, let them go b/c I could not afford to fix it at the time, eventually, they stop firing and the engine runs rough, so you might as well replace it if you can.
