I used to find a decent caliber of folk on the alt.autos.vw.watercooled board back when Usenet was in fashion. VWVortex seems to mostly be gofast kiddies. I've been through 3 Jettas before I got to the Saab, so I know the drill...even if my car is a 1995 NG, it's roundly lightyears more reliable than anything I've ever seen from VW.
My sister's 99 Jetta has been a total nightmare, but I made sure she took some critical steps to get stuff covered under warranty: if she had a problem, no matter how much she has to yell, get the service guy to put it on the ticket. She complained about oil consumption at 8,000 and every 3500 miles after that.
By 55,000, it was using a quart every 1000 miles, but with the documentation, she was able to get VW to rebuild the engine (on their dime) last month. (The car was originally warranteed 2/24 or something else that didn't inspire any confidence.) The kicker: they found the oil pump chain was about to bust when they disassembled it.
She also had the O2/MAF go bad and melt the cat, the dealer had to be goaded into doing it under the emissions warranty.
The worst one was when the dealer wanted $350 (parts + 3 hours labor) to do the bad driver's door latch. I told her to call around, another dealer wanted $220 (one hour, while U wait) and could do it the next day. She went back to first dealer and the service advisor ACTUALLY SAID to her face:
"Ahttp://wwwhttp://www, those two hours are LIQUID GOLD to me!"
I do have to admit: she relayed that to VWoA and they absolutely hit the ceiling. They handed out some serious ass-kicking at the dealer and she's getting the red carpet treatment, at least for now...

PS. Never buy a WV whose first VIN character isn't W. Especially not a 3. Ever.
