Dead Instrument Panel

My '94 900s instrument gauges have been failing and spiking, similar to many other posts I have seen. It's been getting progressively worse for a couple of months, to the point now where the gauges are "dead" more often than they are "alive".
I lose all gauges and all lights (including Cruise indicator and turn signals, but *excluding* the SRS, which has been on for about 3 years from a faulty steering wheel coil that I'm loathe to replace) at completely random intervals. There is absolutely no connection with anything else in the car that triggers the dead or alive condition (engine speed, gear, SID Black Panel display, dimmer switch, head lights, pounding on the dash, etc.).
When the gauges come alive, they flash at max brightness, including the Info Disp and empty fuel light, which then go off and return to normal brightness. About 8 seconds later, the characteristic "ding" is heard (probably because it sends the signal that the SRS light is on). There is no impact on the driveability of the car when the gauges die.
Also, with the odometer "dead", the kilometres are not counted. I've also noticed that when the gauges are "alive", the fuel gauge sometimes reads about 1/4 less than I know is in there - but I suspect that's a different issue (one of many…).
I've seen a number of posts from people with a similar problem to mine, but haven't seen anyone post a definitive solution. Has any replaced the MIU and solved this problem? Did anyone trace a bad ground that resolved it?
Any help appreciated!!
Cheers,
Scott.
