Ditto my recommendation for fork-mount trays - very sturdy and less wind resistance. Get some lycra bike-covers for longer trips. I string a bungee-cord from one pedal to the handlebar to keep the cranks from spinning and hitting the loadbars.
I do not have the Velo-vise fork-mount models, but I think they are very easy to use, and sturdy. I also cut my trays to accomodate the disk brakes on my bikes - much cheaper than the Thule adapter.
Expect mileage to decrease to the high teens to low twenties (mpg), especially at highway speeds.
I also recommend a fairing - I fabricated extenders for mine so that it sits on the windshield instead of on the roof, and I added a clear extension (not shown in picture) to cut down on wind noise.
Email me if you need more info.
BTW - I'm Canadian, from the Ottawa area, living now in NJ.
