There is no check engine light for mechanical wear or failure. An experienced Saab mechanic probably can identify the problem by the noise.

There have been a few problems with the balance chain sprockets wearing out on the non turbos, with the oil pump intake screen been plugged with wear particles. There have been some engines which were lost and replaced with used engines.

So don't hope that it will go away. After an initial eval, the sump will probably be pulled to have a look, then the timeing cover etc. This will be expensive work.

Timing chains, sprockets tensioners are involved, as well as the balance chain etc. Some elect to simply run without the balance chain. The oil pump may be worn. This problem seems to be something that happens to the non turbo engines which is strange as the turbo and NA engines are very similar. In my mind it is a librication failure and the type of oil used may be a critical issue.

Don't delay... sorry about the grim news. Get that professional opinion.
