My '95 900s grinds into 3rd when shifted anything but gently. The reason for this is because the synchro on thrid is very worn and unable to do it's job fast enough. Basicvally a synchro speeds up or slows down the gear you are selecting so that it matches the speed of the engine (more or less). It is a friction plate like your clutch and it can get worn down over time. I chose to just baby shifts into 3rd instead of spending a ton to have the synchros fixed. It can happen to any gear that sees a lot of drive time. Just be gentle with it and you should be ok for a while.
