The wires, cap and rotor can be removed and cleaned. I use a sink of hot water and detergent. Wash everything, shake dry and bake in the oven at around 200F for a while to drive off all mosture. Let cool till warm, spray with lots of armourall classic and then bake again. Let cool and they wipe off the residuals. Don't leave wet with the treatment as that will attract dust and the dust will take on dampness etc.
Clean the insulator of the coil well. Do the insulators of the plugs need cleaning? Put some silicone grease on insides of the cable boots.
Inspect coil low voltage wiring.
Make sure that you know how to get the cables back in the correct order.
The armourall wen thorougly dry is an great insulator and will penetrate and seal surfaces.
The above is a bit time consuming, but works well. You would not want to pay a mechanic $65/hour to wash things.
So the above is good maintenace for the distributor and cables. But the cut out *** could be a bad coil ***.
It never hurts to remove and inspect the spark plugs, their condition tells a story about whats happening inside. That should be one of the first things that you do.
Check the low voltage electrical connectors associated with the distributor for condtion etc. Check for oil inside of the distributor caused by bad o-ring seals.
And check the battery for electrolyte levels and connectors. Sometimes your problem is caused by faulty ignition switches.
Have your VIN run for a motronic recall. Might need to use a TEch-II to get the ECU's build version. There was a recall 294, but that was for '95 production and build code 2.10.3
