94 900s V6 meltdown!

My 94 900s V6 (68k miles) overheated last week and dangerously stalled out on the freeway last week. Please read below and let me know if my mechanic sounds like he's on the right track. I'm a true skeptic since I just had major service less than 3 months ago without any problems detected.

Here's what happened:
- "check coolant level" message for the first time 5 minutes before stalling out
- car was on an incline and would not shift (Auto. trans) and proceeded to rev high (6000 rpms) and lose speed at the same time
- engine temp soared to "HOT" immediately
- car stalled and would not turn over again

Other Details:
- no prior performance problems
- no smoke came out of tailpipe or hood when car overheated
- timing belt replaced at 65k along with major service
- all coolant hoses replaced
- no history of coolant leakage
- coolant level just topped off less than 3000 miles earlier

Mechanic says:
- hydrocarbons detected in exhaust (may be a sign that the cylinders are leaking?)
- says he must replace at least one head gasket to investigate engine to check further damage ($1400 )
- car now starts (since cooling down) but mech says may not be safe to drive
