Bridgestone Potenza: Quiet or Loud?

I have some Bridgestone Potenza 730 on a 97 900SE and they are really loud. At 35 mph they positively howl! They have a fair amount of tread left so I am hesitant to replace them already. My biggest concern is would a switch be an improvement and what should I switch to? I would hate to spend several hundred dollars and get nowhere.
I am very puzzled because in my research the Potenza is often praised as a quiet tire in the reviews, but then there are those who have similar complaints as myself. So is the Protenza quiet or loud?
I have a hypothesis for both. The Bridgestone web site mentions that they use noise cancellation technology to make the tires quiet. If true the tires would need to make more noise that is exactly 180 degrees out of phase with the original noise to work. However, what happens as the tire wears and now this additional noise is no longer 180 degrees out of phase. This would make the tire even noisier then one without this noise cancellation scheme. I think this could explain both types of reviews, but the question remains.
What should I get? I live in SF bay area, so snow is not an issue, but wet traction is. For the most part I just drive highway (101 and 280 if you know the area). I don't think I need to stick to a z rated tire so any recommendations would be welcome. Thanks.
