It's good preventative maintenance to make SURE this resistor is in working order because it is what makes the fan run at low speed. Basically, if the resistor blows you have a one-speed (or a no-speed) fan and your engine can overheat! (Ask me how I know this...)
I took the fan down to an automotive electrical repair place (look in the yellow pages) and they fixed it for $50. A new fan goes for over $400!
I've also heard that it's fairly common for this resistor to fail (the same fan is on all Saab 9000's too). One way you can tell it's failing is if the low speed fan doesn't come on after you shut off the engine or when you're in traffic on a hot day with the AC on. If the temp gauge moves off the middle range (aka the "dead zone") then fix the fan ASAP before you overheat the engine...
