Too lean condition and O2 Sensor

1998 SE Convertible with about 62k miles. Two weeks ago the Check Engine light comes on. Car is running fine. I take it to local independent who reads the code as a Too Lean condition. He resets light, I make an appointment to bring it in the following week. Light comes back on 4 days later.
Bring the car in for service. Tech checks vacuum hose connections, puts in new plugs and gas filter, since the car was due for 65k anyway. I take road trip over the weekend, car is running great, averaging 28-30mpg! On Saturday, 4 days after tune up, light comes on again. (Why don't they just change light to dollar sign?)
Assuming it's the same fault, too lean, could the problem be a bad O2 Sensor or a poorly grounded O2 sensor? The tech is reluctant to waste my time poking around, bless him!
Any other suggestions?
