The Saab service manual recommends servicing the automatic transmission fluid every 60,000 miles. Unless you drive mainly in the city, or tow anything, or drive congested freeways (lots of stop and go or waiting), etc, then Saab recommends 'severe' service schedule of servicing the automatic transmission every 20,000 miles.
The normal service for the Aisin-Warner automatic transmission used in the Saab NG900/9-3 is to drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and clean the filter screen. This normal service replaces about half (3.5 quarts) of the 7 quarts of ATF. The remainder of the fluid is suspended in the torque converter and mixes with the fresh fluid as soon as the car is started. This probably explains why your ATF still looks brown.
As I am sure you already know, when ATF gets too hot, too old, etc. it begins to break down turning from a bright red color to a brown color. My best advice is to call around to automatic transmission shops to find someone with an ATF flushing machine. This is machine that will catch all the old fluid while pumping new fluid into the automatic transmission. If you plan to keep the car for a long period of time, I would also recommend that you switch to Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is compatable with the Aisin-Warner transmission (meets the Dexron III requirements). Being a synthtic fluid the Mobil 1 ATF has much better fluid break down protection than convential ATFs.
If you use a synthtic ATF, you can extend the normal service intervals to 30,000 miles in 'severe' service (stop and go city driving and towing), or 60,000 easy freeway miles.
