It could be pre ignition, i.e. the fuel igniting before it should, i.e. before the spark plug fires. In the days of carburettors, too weak a mixture, or timing problems, or low octane fuel, could produce this sort of sound, known as pinking or knocking. Modern engine management should prevent it, but perhaps you could try filling up with the best quality fuel. In the UK there are two grades of unleaded, standard and "super plus". Super plus is recommended for highly tuned vehicles, and I tried it for a while in my BMW Z3 2.8, but found little or no difference, and it is 10% more expensive. Not that the Z3 was highly tuned at 195 bhp from 2.8 litres.

I run my 900 turbo on regular fuel with no problems.

The other possible cause is carbon deposits on the valves or elsewhere in the combustion chamber. These can cause pre ignition, as they can get red not during the combustion process, and not cool down by the time the fuel cycle begins, causing the fuel to ignite early.

Using a good fuel system cleaner (Techron Concentrate is recommended by several SAABers on the Board, although I have not seen this in Europe)over a sustained period (say once a week for a month) should remove this, and once again, using good quality fuel, which should include detergent cleaners (in the UK at least)will prevent re-occurance. By the way, if you do this, change the oil at the end of the month. If this does not work, then have the compression tested. Low compression could indicate burnt valves, which is a head off and de coke job, and is not fun.
