I don't know if it's "less of an issue" but I can tell you that my 97 900s engine died because of the balance shaft/lubrication issue. Ideally you would have an experienced Saab mechanic listen to the engine before buying. It's not easy to identify and I never noticed any change in sound when the problem developed on my car. If you hear a rattle from the engine block (warm) sounding like "loose chains" then be preparred to spend a couple of grand to repair it. If you hear anything like a knocking sound then you are potentially looking at much more serious damage. Run! Even if you don't hear anything unusual you can't be completely sure that nothing is wrong. That's why you see people on this board recommending that you have a mechaning inspect the car...
