A couple options
-I'm not sure how much 1 oz. reduces the resivor? But, it sounds minimal enough. Try letting the decrease occur, and don't refill. See if loss continues beyond the reported 1 oz. during the second month. If there is no additional loss and the amount is not enough to trigger the 'coolant low' SID sensor, that may be where the coolant level is just going to be. A bit low, but not enough to cause consern. Topping off only forces the extra to be eliminated at the engine heats up.
-If loss continues beyond the 1 oz. in second month or low coolant indicator is displayed on SID, then it is being lost inappropriately. Possible locations seem to be water pump, heater core, and head gasket. Any of these could cause 'mysterious loss' as loss may not leave evidence easily detectable.
-Water pump discussions here on tsn reported sounds of bad bearings indicating poor function.
-heater core evidence seems to be green residue on drain (under car). Follow the two large black coolant hoses from under the distributor, back toward the firewall. Crawl under car (supported appropriately) and trace these hoses into the heater core (above cat. converter). There should be a large hose drain nearby. Look for greenish powder residue. That would be coolant leaking through the heater core.
-head gasket problems are evident in 1)leaking coolant/oil down engine; 2)milky froth in oil; 3)coolant no longer blue, but rather a dark oily mixture.
Dean also mentioned that sometimes a hose leak can occur in locations where a slow drip will evaporate, leaving no noticable evidence. At 1 oz. every month, I'd live with the annoyance unless coolant is mixing with the oil. Adding 1 oz (1/2 water & 1/2 coolant) equates to $10 ($8 gallon of coolant and at most a $2 gallon of distilled water) every 32 months.
Best of luck!
