went back to autozone today and retested, and same codes as last time, but this time i saw the book, and it doesnt read "coolant temp sensor shorted" , it reads "coolant temp sensor, high input" there is another code for "low input". what exactly does this mean?
i pulled the sensor and tested the resistance of the sensor and the wiring harness. there were 2 wires, and i measured (wire 1 to wire 2) the resistance with a cold engine (did this after work today) as approx 1500 ohms on the sensor and 3000 ohms on the harness. separate tip and ring to ground measurement was "infinity" on the sensor. so those numbers are in the range of correct by what you said in your reply to my earlier post, and very far from a short, but now the question is, does "high input" = "short" , or something else?
is the computer confused, or is it me?
also, is the coolant temperature guage on the dash fed by this sensor, and if so, why does the guage appear to work (start in blue, then gradually get up to just below middle of the white) if the computer thinks it is malfunctioning?
thesaabsite.com sells the coolant sensor for 35.00 with a note that high idle is often a sign a bad sensor. my car idles at 1000 rpm (as far as i have noticed, always has) and appears to be running the same as before the CEL came on, in every way. ONE LAST THING you should know...i appear to have the "head gasket leak" described in other recent posts, and my coolant was a little low, just topped off tonight.
thanks,
franks
