I don't mean to patronize you but do try this...
Have one person press AND HOLD the in-door hatch release button. While it is held down, have another person pull the hatch up.
My guess is that you press and release the button (like a single push button) and you are hearing the latch unlock and lock up again all at once. If you press the button and hold it will unlock. while held only. then letting go of the button will lock the hatch back up again.
just try it and report your result back here okay?
