Fuel Grade

I have been using regular (87 octane) gas for my 95 900S (non-turbo) and have been noticing what I believe to be engine knocks - clicking/rattling sound in the following situations:
- accelerating up hills
- accelerating abruptly when the car is rolling (feet off gas) at low speeds i.e. trying to beat a traffic light.
I recently tried using mid grade (89 octane) gas but am still experiencing similar results. The SAAB manual recommends a minimum 87 octane rating.
What is the experience of other folks? Do I need to put premium to solve this problem? Will probably try that on the next tank of gas.
Thanks,
Simon
