Ok, so it all began innocently enough when I discovered that the chain rattling noise under the hood was the timing chain.. and after discovering wear in the cam gears, I began the process of trying to actually GET to the timing chain armed w/ nothing more than the Haynes Manual and my desire to not hand over 2K dollars to an indie mechanic here in Sterling, VA, and well, the crazy notion that even w/ no previous real mechanical work other than my motorcycle and my volvo, I just might pull it off... (see previous posts for detailed info on my diagnosis..)
As I got to the point where I needed to remove the crank pulley, I noticed that the crank pulley used in my 95 SET is much heavier looking than the one shown in the Haynes manual. My crank pulley looks like a regular pulley that had a large metal weight disk screwed onto it (to aide in inertia is my guess?). However, the one in the haynes manual is this sleek spoked pully that looks like it would weight significantly less than mine. Does anybody have any idea what I'm talking about and does anyone know if this pulley would work on my car? Diameter concerns? Inertia concerns? Performance upgrades?
Something that the Haynes manual DOESN'T tell you about doing a timing chain job w/ the engine in the car..
You have to take off the tensioner to get to the last bolt that needs to come out, it seems the tensioner covers a crucial remaining bolt on the timing cover.. Now, I can't find any info on the tensioner removal, so it seems that in order to get to it, I need to take off the alternator.. Which they also seem to lack to mention in the manual..I'm grateful for the Haynes manual, but I'm also keeping my fingers crossed that Bentley makes one soon. :)
I'm not giving up, but I am going to wait for a break in the weather (98 degrees doesn't make for good garage work weather) before I continue.. I'm gonna get this thing back on the road! W/ y'alls help, and the haynes manual, I can still pull this off. :)
