Joe,
I just had a very similar issue that I posted about a week or so ago. Got in the car one morning and the clutch pedal was rock hard. Pushing it to the floor felt like I was bending the pedal and the car would engage at the very bottom. I posted to the board and got the same response about tugging on the clutch cable or more exactly the spring on the cable. That helped loosen it enough so that I could drive it to my mechanic. My mechanic said it was not the cable, but he went ahead and lubbed it up. He said it could be something in the plates of the clutch, but since it was drivable (albeit hard to push the clutch) and there was no gear grinding...I should drive it until I trully needed to replace the clutch.
