Yes you can get a magnetic drain plug for 2 or 3 dollars. Be happy. Are they the equally effective? No.
But I will say that the inexpensive magnetic drain plugs will pick some stuff up and may be relatively effective at presenting large bits of metal for an advance indictator of destructive failure, such as bits of chain rollers or sprocket teeth fragments caused by the teeth wearing so thin that they fall off.
One think in the favour of the inexpensive oil plugs is that the baffle in the oil sump may be quite effective at preserving a quiet zone around the drain plugs magnet to reduce the tendancy of oil thrashing knocking things off of the magnet.
The long neck and stainless construction of the $27 unit avoids having the far end of a steel unit becomming the opposite magnetic pole which will attract some ferous particles but not well enough to retain them. And this also be a problem with a formed steel oil sump where the area around the threads in the sump become magnetic as well. But with an amuminum sump, this is not an issue.
