Installed new idler pulleys -- a couple hints Posted by Andrew [Email] (#1013) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Andrew) on Fri, 30 Aug 2002 16:15:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Ordered both pulleys and belt from eEuroparts. Free shipping put my total cost at under $80.00. My local shop, who does good work, quoted me $270.00 installed.
Upper pulley was cake to install. I tightened the bolt pretty well but after I ran the engine to make sure everything was working, I rechecked the bolt and it was a little loose. Tightened and repeated procedure and it was still tight.
Lower pulley looked to be more of a challenge. I ended up using the old bolt and washer instead of the torx bolt and shield provided with the new pulley. I used two trick that made the install very easy. First, taking a cue from Dean, I used a dab of super glue on metal ring (used extreme caution) then attached original washer. This allowed me to eliminate one thing from the install and get it centered as well. Second, since I don't have a magnetic retrieval tool, I tied a thin string to the bolt and then tied the string to the car. Gave me peace of mind that I wasn't going to have to hunt down the bolt. Then, I inserted the bolt into the washer/pulley assembly and fit the pulley on the mount. Everything rested in place and I could simply twist the bolt until the threads engaged. I got lucky based on other posts and the bolt caught in under 60 seconds. Then I untied the knot on the bolt with a needle nosed pliers and tightened with a wrench.
I need to install the new belt tomorrow. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Andrew
