I was planning on replacing the rear vc gasket this weekend, it "appeared" to be leaking, and thought maybe it was leaking oil into the sparks, causing hard start when cold. Well, when I removed the plenum, the plenum gasket (the paper one) was soaked with oil. And the plenum, which I just cleaned about a month ago, was likewise full of oily crud again.
The vc gasket did not appear to be leaking into the sparks. However, the spark closest to the timing belt had oil on it. (v6vert: engine was cold/overnight, no smell of gasoline when removing sparks, so maybe not leaky injectors causing this). I suspect it is this oily condition causing the hard start when cold.
Question: where could this oil be coming from? The oil level did seem to be a bit high, so maybe overfilled condition, backs up through PVC into plenum, so when I turn off the engine, the oil settles down the plenum onto the spark? The IAC tube was likewise oily inside, not soaked, but about a drop when sticking my finger in and around, definitely wet.
BTW, both the front VC (which I just replaced) and the rear "appear" to be leaking from the same place, the lower corner, closest to timing cover. But its not an obvious leak. Could this be the cam seals leaking instead? I did not replace the rear on the chance it was not the cause of the leak, why pull it apart if I don't have to.
Thanks again for any input
